The recent attacks on Jussie Smollet have broken my heart in more ways than one, but it also made me wonder. When did we begin to use our difference in beliefs as reasoning for hurting someone?
It seems the only reason the two men who attached Jussie was his sexuality... since when did that become a defining factor in someone's character that can justify a personal attack that leaves a man close to death? This is not about political affiliation or beliefs besides the one where being a good person is one of the most important things we can do in this life. Why should we focus on being a good person? For the people watching us. What if a little kid had seen the attack the out? That kid would be scarred for life, and can't you blame him. Kids are born with this innocence that all adults could stand to learn from. Kids WANT to help their friends and they WANT to do good deeds, something all of us adults could learn from.
This goes far beyond physical violence, think back and try to remember when the last thought did a good deed, and not because someone was looking or you thought it would help you get a date, but because you wanted to. You saw a neighbor in need. In life, we spend SO much time focusing on superficial things that don't matter, but this is what matters. Doing good deeds for our friends and family, and teaching the next generation that this is the most important aspect of our lives.
