Battle For Azeroth: A Player's Perspective

The new expansion for World of Warcraft was released worldwide this week and I interviewed my boyfriend about it.

I asked my boyfriend what he liked about the new expansion of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth.

"I like a good story and Blizzard has gone above and beyond with that. It may not always be a good story, but it's always fun to watch where the story goes. I think Blizzard has done a great job at setting the game up because many players can enjoy the game in their own way. This expansion was the smoothest expansion I've experienced. I have had the privilege to not come across the bugs that others have had to endure."

Honestly, he seems to enjoy it. From an outsiders view, I can see how this game can be seen as distracting from the outside world. All these people that play the game enjoy something different about it. Some enjoy the escape from reality others enjoy the story like my boyfriend.

Personally, I don't like the game, but that's likely because I don't like games in that style of play. Blizzard has done an impressive job keeping old fans of the game and intriguing new potential players with either the game layout or the stories.

I asked my boyfriend why he likes the "Horde," and this is his reply:

"What drew me to the Horde was me mostly being a kid, and I was kind of an outcast. I was shy and not as into the school stuff. The whole idea of the Horde is a bunch of outcasts joining together for this noble cause."

Based on his explanation I think the Horde is noble. Even if only in their own way. They may not seem noble based on some of the quests, but they stick together and figure out how to solve problems as a team.

I asked my boyfriend how he hopes the expansion (or story) will end.

"It started as a game, but now it's more of a war of resources and odd crimes. Nobody wants peace right now; everyone's arguing about something. If the Alliance wins, the Horde will be slaughtered, sold as slave labor or imprisoned. There is no easy win here. The only way to the end of this war is by stalemate. At this moment the war is the equivalent of Russia and the US and their fight over who can grab a bigger nuke first in order to better their power."

I asked my boyfriend what character he chose to be and why.

"The blood elf is kinda the most normal looking creature in the game. The only reason the blood elves are in the Horde is that the Alliance wouldn't accept them. I didn't choose the blood elf for any particular reason, and they aren't all that important in my group."

The game sounds pretty all-around based on my boyfriends' replies to my questions.

I know one thing is for sure while he's playing with his friends: he's having a fun time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
