Unless you live under a rock, you should know that we as a planet are facing some very serious problems. How does this have anything to do with science fiction? EVERYTHING. Based on the previous sentence alone, you hopefully already know that I believe Star Trek is better than Star Wars.
To Boldly Go…
Unlike Star Wars or any other sci-fi series that was created merely as entertainment and only focus on violence and action, Star Trek is centered on boldly going where no man has gone before: seeing past race (Spock is half Vulcan and half human), sexuality, and other cultural dilemmas.
Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, purposefully made Star Trek a series not just about science, but also about approaching things logically and peacefully to eliminate ignorance and explore new worlds. Star Trek: The Next Generation alone tackles some of the biggest issues of 90’s by discussing racism, AIDs, homosexuality, and more. Also, Star Trek TOS was the first television series to have a black woman portray an important reoccurring character, Lieutenant Uhura.
Star Trek was never focused on action and violence; in fact, you will never hear Captain Kirk say “set phasers to kill.” Instead, no matter how great the threat him and his crew may be under, Captain Kirk will always say “set phasers to stun.”
Can you imagine how great our world would be if instead of focusing on violence and greed, we would focus on logic, peace and unity?
Also, no character is as annoying as Jar Jar Binks in the Star Trek universe.
