The two movies, Batman and True Grit, have one similarity: seeking the true meaning of justice. However, they are seeking in different ways. Batman (a.k.a Bruce Wayne) and Rooster Cogburn are characters some people would call an, anti-hero Batman is trying to find justice after witnessing his parents get murdered, while Rooster helps a young adolescent seek justice for the murder of her father.
In the film, True Grit, Rooster Cogburn gives a first impression of being a regular drunk man, who doesn’t seemed phased by anything going on in the world around him. But, as the movie rolls on, we learn more about him and his characteristics that make him an anti-hero. For example, when Mattie comes in to town, she is on a mission to find the man in charge of murdering her father. She talks to the sheriff, who then explains to her about Rooster and two other marshalls. He explains how mean and hot headed Rooster can be. “The meanest one is Rooster. He’s a pitiless man, and fear don't enter into his thinking.” We know for a fact, that Mattie wants to see Tom Chaney (convicted of murder) to hang for his wrong doing. However, Mr. Chaney is also wanted for another crime down in Texas. As we go further into the film, we realize that he has a protective characteristic. When Mattie made her way across the river, Laboeuf had enough of her attitude and decided to give her a whipping. That's when Rooster gets his protective side out. He pulls out his gun and threatened to shoot if he did not stop whipping her. We are given the clue that Rooster is a caring man. However, Labouef was getting fed up with Rooster's behavior. Then we see the two left behind, and they are once again alone. Then, we find out that Rooster had a son with a divorced woman. And how she left him to go back to her husband, and take his son. We also find out his son didn't take a liking to him. Unfortunately, we don't learn anything else about them. Then we find out how salty Rooster can be. Near the end, we see Mattie get bit by a snake. In order to save her, Rooster slashes Little Blackie (Mattie's horse) and rubs salt into the wound to make him run to his literal death. We see that carrying salt can be used for a good cause. Thus in conclusion, we learn that Rooster is fit to be an anti-hero after all.
In the same category, we can infer that in the movie Batman Begins, Batman is also an anti-hero. However, he is an anti hero in a different way. He's trying to find justice in a different way. Batman has several characteristics that define him as an anti-hero. One character trait is; vigilante. When he was a child, he witnessed his parents get murdered. He realized, In order to stop evil that started, he must sometimes break the laws himself. When finding out that Gotham is being destroyed by Dr. Crane, Bruce knows he must face his fear. As a child, he fell into a cave, and bats attacked him. His father looked at him and said, "Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to get back up! Don't be afraid". He was afraid when he saw his parents get killed. But then, the fear turned to anger. He was angry at the shooter, he believed revenge was justice. He turned fear against those who are fearful. But then, that anger turned to guilt. He thought his parents death was his fault. Due to the fact of his first interaction with bats, he had a fear. The 3 of them went to the theaters, and Bruce got spooked by the bats in the movie. Therefore, they all left and came in contact with the mugger.
So to wrap it all up, an anti-hero is a sympathetic character. They can be presented as a tough a respectful character externally, but is sensitive inwardly. Both Batman and Rooster show the characteristics. They are both wanting to seek justice, but have to face it in a different way.
