The words “basic” and “white girl” and “basic white girl” are seen or heard on a daily basis. On the Internet, there are different things like the basic white girl outfit, starter pack, even a test to see how much of a basic white girl you are.
First off, why would anyone want to be labeled or label anyone as “basic?" Every person is unique, and yes, we have similarities, but no, not everyone is the same.
All it takes is a Starbucks drink in your hand, Uggs on your feet and an oversized t-shirt, and you are forever labeled as “the basic white girl”. But what does it even mean to be a basic white girl? Is it bad? Is it good? My problem with that term is people now use it to offend others. It is used as an insult and people say it as a rude remark. Unfortunately if you are in Greek Life, you are automatically considered a basic white girl. But why the stereotypes? I feel as if it is actually offensive, at times.
The stereotype is now basically framing all girls as a girl who is dumb or ditzy, and a girl who has a Valley accent and only drinks skinny lattes. A sorority girl. Labeling someone a “basic white girl” by what they drink or wear is pathetic and obviously shows you have a lack of knowledge. Sometimes that stereotype is offensive. There are more to these “basic white girls” than just their Starbuck drinks and boots.
Drinking the refreshing coffee (which everyone loves, and if you don’t you’re just wrong) and wearing Uggs doesn’t mean you are “basic." It is called a trend. Just as gluten free is a trend, high-waisted shorts were a trend, etc. So to everyone who drinks Starbucks, wears leggings, over-sized t-shirts and Uggs, although we all do rock the same trend, we aren’t all the same. And to the people who label others because of those trends, I suggest rethinking your stereotypes.
