There are so many different skills in life that are considered little skills or skills you really don't think you need to know. But it is more than just learning these basic skills it comes down to having knowledge behind it.
Take me for example, I will be the first to tell you when it comes to cars I am oblivious, absolutely clueless. And let me tell you, it is literally terrible. As someone who is very independent, I like to be able to figure out and solve problems myself. But how am I supposed to know something is wrong with my car if I don't know what is considered right or normal?
I went to a High School where you were able to take classes such as floral design, woodshop, a metals class or even animal science classes but we were not taught how to change a tire, do taxes or even things as simple as laundry and cooking.
All things that end up being vital.
Flash forward to my senior year of college, I finally have a car of my own at school which is pretty old but has very few miles on it. I have been told that I need new tires but figured it could wait until I had the money for it.
WRONG.
My tires were so bad that the metal wires on the inside of the tire were showing. This means there is absolutely no tread (grip) on my tires at all and at high speeds can cause major sparks, a blown tire or a fire. All things someone would not want. The scariest part is I had just driven over three hours on the highway and then shorter distances (but still highways speeds) multiple times after that before even knowing.
And I would not have known if it wasn't for the nice man at the concert I went to who made a specific point to come to tell me about it after helping me park my car (Thank You).
But it is not just me, and it is not just with cars.
I have friends who are literally unable to cook for themselves, cannot even follow a recipe. I have other friends who have never once done a load of their own laundry, don't know how to start the washer. Not to mention when it comes time to do file taxes for the year. Lord help us because are all clueless.
It has become a time where we are so reliant on the support and help of other people to do things for us (like change our tires, do our taxes and cook) that we don't even notice how nieve we are to the important skills around us. Learning how to check the oil or change a tire could save your life, save you money and get you out of a pickle.
