We are less than eighty days from the election and it appears that we are headed down a scary path. We are a truly divided electorate. The talking-heads and the candidates themselves are throwing personal insults and accusing each other of incompetence, pandering, fraud, and worse. More than half our country dislikes Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton, our respective republican and democratic presidential nominees. It seems more that the voters will be voting against one of the two candidates, rather than for them. The level of bipartisanship is so high that it seems that no matter which candidate is elected president, there will be no mandate and the winner will be unable to achieve his or her agenda. We as a country need something of a miracle: a candidate who is able to reach across the aisle, who will bring people together, and who will re-establish honor to this race.
We need a Jed Bartlet to enter the race and save the day. Jed Bartlet, the fictional former governor from New Hampshire and president from “The West Wing,” is brilliant, inquisitive, and compassionate. He considers the opposite viewpoint and deliberates effectively with his staff.
As great as four more years of a Bartlet presidency would be, a Matthew Santos presidency could be even better. Santos, Bartlet’s successor who campaigned to victory during the last season of “The West Wing” always stands true to his beliefs. He does not let big-money donors or political operatives influence his positions or choices. He served in the Marines, while neither Trump nor Clinton (nor Bartlet), have any actual military experience. And perhaps most refreshing, Santos appointed his defeated republican opponent, Arnold Vinick, as his Secretary of State. Santos personifies bi-partisanship and is a centrist. He is a socially conscious democrat, but is more of a hawk than most democrats. His education plan leans more republican in that it calls for ending teacher tenure.
Since we cannot, unfortunately, have a fictional character as our president, perhaps the real-life creator of these fictional presidents wants the job.
