10 Winter Struggles Of The College Student

Winter may be a favorite season for some people. Yes, making a snowman, wearing a cute sweater, and drinking a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows all sound pretty fun. Also, we all have secretly wished for chilly weather to come during those hot and humid summer days. However, winter is also a dreadfully long season with blizzards and unbearable cold, especially for college students. Here are 10 things that happen to college students during a cold winter season.

1. Hitting the snooze button

Getting out of that cozy, fuzzy, and warm blanket and duvet is a real struggle. Why try to go out of your warm bed to face icy wind?

2. Cold dorm bathroom

After a hot shower when you probably took more time than you needed, walking out to the cold communal bathroom will freeze you.

3. Getting ready for a class with hats, scarves, gloves, boots and puffy coat

Seriously, getting ready to go out takes much more time in winter than summer. Do not show any skin if you want to live.

4. Walking to the lecture room

Was that building this far…? Or did our campus get wider overnight?

<5. Yay snow

Wow, fluffy white snow! I can make snow angels and everything looks so pretty!

5. Never mind, NO snow

Because that white fluffy snow to can change into some black slush so quickly. I mean I want my freedom to have my choice of shoes.

6. Eating in bed...a lot

Because why not watch Netflix, eat chips, and feel warm at the same time? But did I really just finish that entire bag of chips?

7. Walking on the ice

Steps, roads, anywhere you walk...It will be wise to watch your feet.

8. When you wear the wrong shoes for the weather

I guess it was not wise to wear a pair of converse today…Tiptoe all the way if you do not want to shiver with wet feet.

9. Should I work out? Or should I not

The gym is far and the weather is cold… doesn't walking around in the cold weather already burn enough calories?

10. Library..? I will study in bed

I mean just like the gym, everything outside my bed is far...I can do readings in my bed...maybe after this short nap.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
