The new line of Barbie dolls released to the public gives a whole new meaning to "Come on Barbie, Let's go party." Typically, a new line of toy dolls wouldn't be making headlines, but there is nothing ordinary to this particular line. Barbie is proud to have released a line that incorporates dolls of all sizes, shapes and ethnicity. There are three new body shapes accompanied with a variety of skin tones and hair styles that leaves little girls and boys the opportunity to pick a doll that is easier to identify with. Long gone are the days of the stereotypical, cookie cutter blonde Barbie and say hello to real life and real beauty!
Barbie made headlines in October when they released a commercial that was captioned "Imagine The Possibilities." This empowering ad follows five little girls following their dreams by pursuing their desired career- a professor, veterinarian, professional soccer coach, business woman and a paleontologist. Here's the catch, it's the young girls out in the adult world but *spoiler* at the end, it shows one of the girls playing with her Barbies using her imagination. If you haven't seen this commercial, I heavily advise you to go out and watch it. This video is so important to our youth because it teaches the girls to pursue whatever job or dream they have, even if it is one you would typically see men doing. One of the girls was a coach for a professional men's soccer team because that's what she wants to do as a career path. If you have younger sisters or cousins like I do, make sure you show them this video. I know I wish I had some type of propaganda encouraging me to pursue my dreams at a young age. I applaud this commercial for breaking down stereotypical gender roles in society and I look forward to seeing Barbie include young boys in their commercials from here on out.
Back when I was younger and wanted to play with dolls, I had a difficult time finding a doll that was sporty, short like I was (and still am), or didn't come in a pink outfit (not a fan). This deterred me from playing with dolls because I couldn't relate to having a dream house or pink mustang. I had neither and frankly I never desired them. Along with every pink, perfect Barbie was Ken, her equally perfect boyfriend. When you hear the name Barbie, you think impossibly tiny body, long perfect hair, lots of pink and always having a boyfriend. Now it doesn't have to be like that anymore. When Barbie comes up in discussion, perhaps the first thing that will be said would be how amazing all her body types are or how Barbie literally can have any job she wants, and that you could be just like her by following your own dreams and ambitions.
Instead of having young girls and boys only have unrealistic body types and images to play with, they now have plenty to choose from. Teaching children not to judge and that every body and person is different will only make for a better world and future. Having a doll reflect modern women and commend their accomplishments and diversity is something to be celebrated. Next step for Barbie would be the inclusion of boys playing with dolls to really break down gender roles. Even though this commercial and new line of dolls came way too late in my opinion, I am thrilled it's out and on shelves. This world and toy manufacturing has a long way to go but each victory should be praised. Hats off to you Barbie, I look forward to your future empowerment for young children across the world.
