After years of criticism on the unrealistic body dimensions of the original Barbie and the effects that these impossible standards pose for young girls, Mattel has decided to make a change.
On Thursday, Mattel announced that they would be introducing a new line of Barbie dolls that come in petite, tall and curvy body types. The original Barbie will continue to be sold along with these new additions.
This makeover is a welcomed change as the company attempts to embrace a more diverse and realistic doll that young girls can actually relate to. Tania Missad who is the Director of Consumer Insights for the doll line said in a video on the Barbie brand website, “We have to let girls know it doesn't matter what shape you come in, that anything is possible.”
The public has heard their message. Thursday’s announcement was well received on social media, where people thanked the Barbie Corporation for acknowledging the fact that girls come in different shapes and sizes and so should their dolls.
Although this seems like a pretty big change for Mattel, the company has been trying to change its image for some time now. Last year, the Barbie brand unveiled 23 new dolls that included a broader range of skin tone options, eye colors and hairstyles. In addition, Barbie’s famously pointy feet were changed so that the doll could wear flats rather than her go-to option of heels.
Barbie’s makeover is an incredibly important and momentous step in the right direction toward embracing the diversity and uniqueness of all women, as well as disrupting what society says about standards of beauty. “When you see them all together it looks like this tribe of young girls, the way a kid might see that reflected in their own circle of friends or their family or their school,“ Robert Best, senior director of Barbie Product Design states about the new line in a video for Time.
A few of these new Barbie dolls are available online; however, you will have to wait until March 1 to see them in stores. Mattel will introduce these new dolls in stages throughout the year but we cannot wait to introduce Barbie to the 21st century.
