Take a stroll along Israel's infamous West Bank barrier, and you may come across a peculiar hotel building on the corner of Caritas Street in Bethlehem. Boasting the "worst view in the world", the Walled Off Hotel is the latest project from the legendary street artist known only as Banksy.
Banksy is no stranger to addressing controversial issues, and this isn't his first time at the Palestine wall, either. In 2005, he painted a series of thought-provoking images on the wall in protest of the barrier, all with his signature brand of dark humor.
Now, he's returned to the Gaza Strip with an even more ambitious work of art. The Walled Off Hotel is a fully functioning hotel, with a variety of accommodations for its guests: "Scenic" Suites with a breathtaking view of a nearby Israeli watchtower. Artist rooms decorated with pieces from contemporary artists Dominique Petrin, Sami Musa, and of course, Banksy himself. A Presidential Suite "equipped with everything a corrupt head of state would need" (his words, not mine).
With 2017 marking 100 years since the British seized control of Palestine, the Hotel makes a profound statement against the imperialist history of the region, as well as the racial and political baggage that comes with the West Bank wall. Antique styling that conjures up images of colonialism is juxtaposed alongside Banksy's artwork of drone strikes, riot police, and surveillance cameras.
The Walled Off Hotel stands as a mockery of the fanciful hotels that often seem to function as an isolated bubble for visitors to escape from the ugly parts of whatever exotic land they're in. Here, the guests are pressed against the wall, and forced to reflect on the consequences of imperialism. And while it may seem like an adventurous place to stay for a vacation, those looking for an idyllic retreat from the world's problems may want to check in elsewhere.
