We finally saw it, the biggest fight in combat sports history! In all honesty I think the fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather deserves that distinction. It had the atmosphere of a Super Bowl bringing attention from casual and hardcore fans alike. Fortunately for everyone the event we all had been waiting for actually lived up to its hype.
How anyone could see this fight as a disappointment is beyond me. Will it go down as a Gatti-Ward? No, but we just saw a competitive match-up between the greatest defensive fighter of all time and a man with no professional boxing matches to his credit. Despite all the ridiculous trash talk you see from fans on both sides, Mayweather and McGregor both deserve respect for their efforts.
Conor came out strong, his awkward style and angles was a problem for his opponent, also using his jab early on to open up other opportunities. I honestly gave him the first four rounds and was pleasantly surprised and kept thinking back to several boxing greats who in the past could barely touch Mayweather in their fights with him, greats like Pacquiao, Hatton, and Marquez.
Mayweather truly picked things up around halfway through the fight teeing off on McGregor at moments. In fact it was the most offensive I had seen Mayweather fight in a really long time. He noticed his opponents lack of stamina, lack of defensive prowess and he capitalized.
While I know some were not happy with the ref stoppage, looking back I could understand it. McGregor had been on weak legs for a couple rounds, had been rocked, and had not returned any punches in the exchange that sealed his fate. I have certainly seen worse stoppages.
Overall this fight was a win for everyone. Mayweather got even more money, McGregor got more not only money but respect for proving he could hang in the boxing ring, and we the fans got to enjoy a spectacle unlike what we will see again for a long time.
