I knew it was going to be tough to get a dog while I was working full-time in the summer, but when I added school on top of that, I almost drowned. I had the kind of owner's guilt that eats away at your SOUL – nothing feels worse than turning to close the door and seeing your pup watching you leave with pleading eyes and falling ears. I start tearing up just thinking about it. If you want a dog but you're going to school, you need to think long and hard about your decision. But if you've decided that you just HAVE to get one like I did, here are a few things that lessen the stress of juggling school and entertaining your best friend.

1. Create a routine

I know it might not always be possible, but try to wake up for class and return from class at the same time every day. This reduces stress on your pet because they know exactly when to expect you, and they know you'll always come back! I have to wake up at 5:30 am every morning before work or school to let Harvey out to use the restroom. Of course, I'm not a fan of waking up that early, but it's a sacrifice I make because I want a dog!

2. Spend all of your free time with your pet when you're home

Your dog's life revolves around you. So, when you get home, snuggle the heck out of them! You chose to get a dog, so you can't just snuggle when it's convenient for you.

3. Take lots and lots of walks

Contrary to what you may think, you DO have time. I promise. You get bored when you sit at home with nothing to do for hours – so does your dog! Right when you get home from class, go for a 15-30-minute walk with your best friend. They need an opportunity to get all their wiggles out, especially younger pups! Harvey is a spaz when I get home, and nothing makes me happier than to see his face light up when I bring out his leash.

4. Learn to love puzzles and games

You know what dogs do when they get bored or anxious? Ask my floors, blinds, and couch – they're torn up. Try playing games with your pet when you are home! Harvey's favorite is "Hide and Treat." Put your dog in your bedroom, hide one treat in a super obvious spot in the living room, then hide the rest of the treats around the house! Your pup will love this game, and you will too – mental stimulation and they get a treat. It's a win-win.

5. Have your pet help you with your homework

I'd much rather play with my dog than do homework – who wouldn't? Every chance I get, I do my work on my bed or couch, somewhere Harvey can join me so he can feel wanted and loved. Even though I'm not entertaining him, he knows I'm not trying to avoid him. Just make sure they don't try to eat your homework!

Take every advantage to bring your dog on adventures, snuggle, or bring them along when you run errands. I know school gets busy and stressful, but you chose to get a dog, so their happiness and quality of life is your responsibility. Don't let them down.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way.
