I'm Breaking Up With My Supermarket-Bought Shampoo And Conditioner, And You Should, Too

I never knew this about my hair products.

Until recently, I have been completely blind to the ingredients in my shampoo and conditioner. Even some of the styling products I use have shocked me. You know those commercials with gorgeous looking models promoting this "amazing" and "hair saving" products? The name brands that promise you up and down that their products will turn your hair into something to be envied? THEY. ARE. LYING. Yes, I know, I was shocked that anyone on T.V. or the internet could by lying to me...NOT. I am ashamed at myself for not realizing it sooner.

Let me explain a little bit, you must be thinking "Oh it can't be THAT bad, can it?", yes, it really can be. I have done some research on some popular hair care brands and I'm disgusted.

You know what alcohol is, alcohol is an extremely harsh substance that is in some of your favorite brands. Are you trying to tame frizz and have beautifully tamed shiny hair? Good luck when you're using a product containing alcohol, it strips the hair of its natural oils. Instead of helping your hair it is really just making things worse.

Alcohol is the only thing in your hair products weighing it down. Sulfates are also found in many popular products that you're probably using right now. Want to know where else sulfates are found? Dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent. Sulfates strip the hair of its natural oils and proteins.

They also lead to an itchy scalp, which most products will say they soothe an itchy scalp, but they're putting in something that causes an itchy scalp? Makes SO much sense. Silicones are also found in shampoos and conditioners, they can build up on the hair shaft and prevent moisture and essential oils from getting to it. Build up happens because of some of your favorite products.

If all of this sounds bad to you, you can avoid it. Read the ingredients on the back of your hair products. If it has any type of alcohol, it is bad for your hair. Research those big words, they do mean something and most of the time they're a type of silicon or sulfate, which are bad for your hair. Look for products that do not have these things, a simple search can tell you if a product has these things or not. You and your hair deserve better than this.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
