A short nap is an emotional reset button. I am serious. Personally, naps are life-savers for me. I take a 20-minute nap every day on my break at lunch, so I can come into the second half of the day refreshed and revitalized. It improves my mood, lowers my stress levels, and gives me a second wind for my workday.
The New York Times wrote an article about this very thing, entitled "Hit the Reset Button in Your Brain" which goes into detail about why a short nap can dramatically change your brain chemistry.
Taking breaks is biologically restorative. Naps are even better. In several studies, a nap of even 10 minutes improved cognitive function and vigor, and decreased sleepiness and fatigue. If we can train ourselves to take regular vacations — true vacations without work — and to set aside time for naps and contemplation, we will be in a more powerful position to start solving some of the world’s big problems. And to be happier and well rested while we’re doing it.
I am sure you probably know this, but I will reiterate for those who do not: mental illness is exhausting. It takes a great deal of energy when you hit a depressive episode, manic episode, anxiety attack, what have you. It just drains your body and the fatigue is intense and very often can stick around for days after the initial episode has dissipated. Sometimes, a short nap can not only reset your mind but can revitalize your body.
Naps can very often be the difference between a productive day and a personal loss. Sometimes, being mature and simply saying, "I need to reset" can really help you better your productivity in the long run. It's a boundaries thing, really. It's healthy to be able to give your body and your mind a break when you need it. It demonstrates self-love and self-care to be able to say yes to twenty minutes of times dedicated to your emotional and physical well-being.
I am a firm advocate of taking care of yourself first so that you are able to give your best to others. It isn't about selfishness, it's about boundaries. Say "yes" to you. Take a nap.
