As a human being, we all have bad days. However, there is a beauty to bad days — because with a bad day, comes a good day. Simple as that, any bad day has the potential to turn around. As a college student, I’ve found that bad days come and go and that the stress of school work can really bring someone down. Bad days hurt, but they don’t have to. There are so many ways that you can turn a bad day around; it all starts with wanting to spend some quality time with yourself. You are your best cure to a bad day; an hour's break from school work can relax the mind, calm the soul, and detox the stress from your life.
Feeling low? Grab a cup of something warm. Coffee, tea, or hot coco — all three provide the soothing effects that a warm drink can really calm that racing mind or heart that is caused by stress. Alongside a warm drink, grab a book and some blankets and just allow that book to transport you to another world — a world full of fiction, fun and fantasy. Not a reader? That’s OK, because there are more ways to cure those “bad days” than just reading (because hey, some people would be more stressed if they had to read more than the required material that is provided by your teacher).
Music: I truly believe it is the key to happiness. There’s nothing that makes you feel better than music, it’s as simple as that. When I’m down, nothing lifts me up than music that has lyrics powerful enough to make me smile and see the world in a different light. As someone who struggles with balancing the stress of school, homework, family, and just life in general, I definitely have bad days. There is a song for every kind of mood; just download Spotify and you’ll see — your life will be changed.
My next tip to cure a “bad day” is so simple, yet so effective: nap time! For some reason, naps seem to be seen as a joke at times; however, little do people know how much some sleep can cure any “bad day.” It’s 2 pm, you’ve finished your classes for the day, and let’s just say you’re tired from the night before and a little cranky because your classes were boring and you really struggled to say awake through them. So now all you can think about is the continued “bad day” you have ahead of you, since you have hours upon hours of homework. This is the perfect time to take a break, allow your mind to heal and refuel for the long rest of the day ahead. Put your pajamas on and snuggle up into bed, set your alarm for 20 minutes and allow yourself to drift off to sleep in peace. (I suggest 20 minutes only if you want a quick recharge to your day.) Now, I promise you I am no expert on sleep or sleeping patterns, however what I do know is that sleep — of any amount —makes me ready to focus on school work as soon as I wake up. There’s nothing more exciting and uplifting than having the fully-rested ability to power through the mountain of homework your teachers have assigned you! So take it form me or don’t, because I really have zero expertise when it comes to how sleep statistically effects our daily lives. However, I can promise you a nap will turn my frown upside down! Thus, I encourage you to try closing those heavy eyelids of yours for however long you desire and taking a break from your “bad day."
Now, I can promise you this next cure to a “bad day” works; however, it’ll only work for those who are willing to try. Art: the key to the mind and the healer of the soul. Art is one of the most therapeutic and healing hobbies. Art, like music or books, can transport you to a place of extreme self-discovery and healing. It’ll lead you to find out new things about yourself, and for some, you may even discover that you’re a talented artist! I, myself, am no artist. However, I’ve found that a bad day really brings the artist out of me. It creates a sense of happiness and relaxation for me, leading me to allow my creative juices to flow. Now for some, just the idea of art alone gives them anxiety. So if art will only make your “bad day” worse, then let’s just try something else!
Okay, so far here’s our list of possible cures to a “bad day”:
- coffee/tea/hot chocolate
- a book and blankets
- some mood setting music
- naps/sleep
- art
That’s a solid list! However, those five items may not cure everyone’s “bad days,” so here are a few more quick tricks to try in order to cure yourself of a bad mood induced by whatever stressors life may throw at you!
- bake cookies (they smell, taste and look good, and will warm your heart)
- pet/play with an animal, pets will 100 percent make you smile
- take a selfie, remind yourself that you are beautiful!
- dance your worries away — alone or with friends!
- watch a feel-good movie
- find someone willing to listen, and vent away everything about your “bad day”
- scream into a pillow or punch it, take your “bad day” out on that pillow!
Remember, a “bad day” is not a “bad life”. A “bad day” is fixable, as long as you’re willing to give yourself time to have some fun, do something silly, creative, or therapeutic, and allow yourself the space you need from the source of the “bad day.” Try something new, and when nothing seems to work, remember this: we are human and “bad days” will happen, but so will “good days.” We control how our days go, and we have a say in whether or not we want to turn our day around. If you are suffering form a bad day, try one of the above solutions; you never know what will work for you.
