Taylor Swift is not the role model we thought she was

If you haven’t heard about the Taylor and Kimye feud/battle/war then you really need to catch up. Recap: Kanye West and Taylor Swift have had their differences with each other since the 2009 VMA’s when Kanye interrupted Swift during her VMA acceptance speech for “Album of the Year”. Then they tried to be friends for a short period of time and Kanye sent her flowers years later as an olive branch. Everyone thought they were cool until Kanye released “Famous” a song on his new album "The Life of Pablo." He directly references Swift by saying “For all my south side n***** that know me best, I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why, I made that bitch famous, I made that bitch famous”. After people heard the lyrics all hell seemed to break loose. Well, yeah. I mean he not only directly called Taylor Swift a bitch, but he also basically said that he made her famous and in turn they might have sex because ya know, Kanye has a big head and thinks less of women. Everyone was waiting to see what Taylor would say about this since she’s been the victim of Kanye’s rude behavior before. Taylor Swift decided to publically criticize West during her acceptance speech at the Grammy’s by saying “there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame…..”. Okay, so what did Kanye do? He took to twitter and tweeted a series of tweets. One of which said he had called Taylor and asked her if the lyrics were okay with her. Last Sunday Kim Kardashian West released a series of videos on her snapchat of Kanye talking to Taylor over the phone. He read her the part of his lyrics where he stated that him “and Taylor might still have sex”; she seemed totally cool with it and was flattered. She even said that it is “kind of a compliment”.

So basically this entire time we all thought Kanye was this huge asshole (which I think he still is), but he’s a little less of one now. Taylor was the victim during her acceptance speech at the 2009 VMA’s, but truly is not the victim here. I thought Taylor Swift was a very down to earth person. She grew up in a small town not too far away from where I’m from, she does all these good deeds and likes doing charity work. To be honest, I feel a little let down. I hated Kanye more than Kanye loves Kanye and him rapping about someone owing him sex because he thinks he made her famous made me hate him even more. I boycotted all things Kanye West: his music, a chance to work his Yeezy fashion show, and anything with the Kardashian name on it. Now however, I feel let down. Kanye did the right thing by asking if she was comfortable with his lyrics (still doesn’t make them right) and she painted him as the bad guy even though she had told him she would tell the media that they had talked about his lyrics. Now, because the entire world knows what happened she’s backpedaling and trying to say that he didn’t tell her beforehand that he would refer to her as a “that bitch” and that’s why she’s upset. Well Taylor, that didn’t seem to be the case in your speech at the Grammy’s.

The other thing that bugs me is that Taylor has become a role model for young girls. She was or at least seemed kind and giving. Her Grammy’s speech slamming Kanye was directed towards young women. So at that point I thought “good for you Tay Tay, don’t let no man try and take credit for your accomplishments, you don’t owe anyone sex!” and I’m sure that’s what many others thought. Here she was trying to teach women a lesson about hard work and that if you work hard and surround yourself with good people you will get to where you are supposed to be and you don’t owe anyone a thank you for helping you get there. But then she called Kanye’s lyrics a “compliment”. You want to be a role model for young girls and women, but you allowed someone to say that about you??? Uhm...what?...... Some role model.

It should be interesting to see how the rest of this pans out, however Taylor Swift’s reputation is pretty damaged right now. Nothing can fix her reputation right now, not even winning a lawsuit against Kimye for recording her. That might damage her image even more.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
