Backyard BBQ Activities

Summer is the perfect time to eat and play bags (or cornhole)!

We all have a favorite outdoor summer activity, especially when it comes to spending time with family. I know I have a few favorites that I grew up with that I couldn't live without playing each summer, especially after coming home from college. Even though I am 21, I cannot have a family BBQ or get together in general go without playing some fun games. As we get older we realize how much little time with have to see the people we love, so I feel like these are huge opportunities to spend quality time with family especially when going away to school, or even moving away for a job.

1. Volleyball

Either on the beach, or in my hometown backyard, this has to be one of my favorite summer activities.

2. Kan Jam

This is such an easy game for setup and it's very easy to play. My family really enjoys playing this game. Even though I am not the best at the game, it's still such a great one to play with friends and family.

3. Soccer

Growing up in a huge back yard made it easy for my family to play soccer during get-to-gethers. Any BBQ at my household wouldn't be complete without the kids playing some soccer in the yard.

4. Capture the flag

Honestly this is such a fun game to play especially at night. My group of friends from home would meet at the park super late and play. Yes, high-schoolers (and college kids now) playing capture the flag at the park.

5. Swimming (obviously!)

What's a summer without swimming? We would honestly be in the pool all day at my friend's house. And when we were done during the day, we would go out at night and play Marco Polo or chicken. It may not be the safest thing to do late at night, but when the whole pool is only four feet around, it definitely makes a difference.

6. Backyard baseball

My family is really big on baseball, so since our yard is pretty large, it made it easy for us to set up some bases and play! Of course we would deal with the typical yelling at each while playing, but what is family for?

7. Hide and seek tag

During our block parties we would always play hide and seek tag (in the dark because we were rebels.) I mean I'd honestly still play if my friends suggested it because it was definitely some of the most fun I had as a kid, teenager and (hopefully soon as an adult!)

8. Bags (Cornhole)

Whatever you call it, it's definitely a go to party game. I personally love this game and I am awful at it, but hey, as long as I can beat my dad every once in a while it's worth it!

There are so so many other fun games to play with your family and friends during a backyard BBQ or just because the weather is beautiful. Those are some of my personal favorites from my childhood, but I am sure everyone has something different that they love to play.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
