Inside The Backpacks Of NYU Undergrad Guys
Rachel A.G. Gilman, 2016

After taking a look inside the bags of some lovely females doing big things in the world, plus rifling through the purses of the Odyssey gang, I thought it was about time to show some men a little bit of love. What follows is what I found in my exploration of the bags of a few great NYU undergraduate guys.

Daniel Cooper, Tisch 2016 / Film/TV Major, BEMT Minor

Hometown: West Bloomfield, Michigan

Daniel is an award-winning filmmaker and Tisch film student from Detroit, Michigan. He has written and directed five successful short films and is currently enjoying an internship at The Weinstein Company. He works primarily with his twin brother, Adam, who lives in Chicago. Daniel spends his free time playing piano and worrying about graduating in December. Find out more about Daniel on his website, or by following him on Twitter.

What's the most important item in your bag?

"The Epi-Pens are important because they'll save my life and I'll die without them, but the high school diploma reminds me of my achievements and that's one of the biggest ones so far in my life."

Dereck Amakye, CAS 2019 / Philosophy and Pre-Med

Hometown: London, England

Dereck was born in London to Ghanaian parents but lived the majority of his life in Cheshire, England. He moved to Westfield, New Jersey during his sophomore year of high school. There, he played varsity soccer until his junior year when he was sidelined due to a heart issue. He then rekindled his love of music by re-enrolling in piano lessons. In another life, he feels he definitely would have tried to become a music producer. He currently works at Urban Outfitters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, volunteers for Doctors Without Borders when he can, hosts "The Other Football" on WNYU, and hopes to soon start writing for Washington Square News. You can follow Dereck on Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr.

What's the most important item in your bag?

"The most important item would probably be my headphones because I have to walk around campus with them. I hate listening to the general sounds of the city and people's random conversations. They help to block everything out. Makes me sound emo, but yeah..."

Eduardo Rios-Pulgar, Gallatin 2018 / Music Journalism, Poetry, and Film

Hometown: Caracas, Venezuela | Miami, Florida

E.R. Pulgar is the founding editor of NYU's Odyssey. He's contributed music writing to Popdust, editorial to HIGHLARK and Dion Ys Us, and poetry to Play(ed) Boy, Brio, and the Gallatin Review. He's also begun work on a novel in collaboration with the Bowery Poetry Club and post-production on a film he shot while abroad in Prague. He lives in Brooklyn, where he plans a strange life of fantastication and overwaters his plant, Hummus. Follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

What are the most important items in your bag?

"Right now my copy of Dante's Inferno, the Mandelbaum translation because I have a presentation and because it has very beautiful drawings. It was the last copy in Bobst. My tarot cards in case anyone wants to do business, and my matchbook and cigarette case, in case anyone wants to do business."

Eli Edwards, Steinhardt 2019 / Media, Culture, and Communications Major, Business Studies Minor

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Eli plays on the NYU baseball team as a left-handed pitcher and is also on NYU's student-run radio station, WNYU, commentating for a few sports radio shows. He also runs a small start up brand called Bobasquad where he sells stylish merchandise like hats revolving around the drink boba. Find out more about Eli on Instagram and Twitter.

What's the most important item in your bag?

"That's a tough question. Homework and class-wise it's definitely my computer because I have all of my information and stuff on that, so if I lost that it'd be pretty bad. However, personal item has to be my hat. For the people looking at this article, 'I Feel Like Boba' is my own brand. You've just got to represent yourself and that's what I'm doing."

Kevin Jiang, CAS 2017 / Cinema Studies and Economics

Hometown: Pullman, Washington

Kevin is NYU's Asian American Canadian Dutch-born cinema studies and economics student. He also works as the Sports Director at WNYU 89.1FM. He'd like for you to say hi if you see him on campus! For now, keep up with him on Twitter and Instagram.

What's the most important item in your bag?

"The most important thing in my bookbag is probably my laptop because it has my entire life on it. That being said condoms [not pictured] are pretty important, too. This is my open critique on NYU housing for not providing condoms for off-campus students."

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
