Backpacking in India

Backpacking is thrilling and generally much different from conventional "touristy" activities. It is a nomadic stroll across tourist destinations without any particular itinerary. Backpacking is a trip, where people simply carry a backpack with the bare essentials for existence.

In India, when you go for backpacking, you have to follow certain rules because of the wide diversity in climate, landscapes, and cultures. But one thing is for sure - you have to carry a water filter bottle in your backpack. One of the primary reasons for this is because you will feel the need to keep yourself well-hydrated while roaming across the country with wide variations in weather conditions.

If you are planning to hit the backpacking scene in India, then here are 15 essential tips that you must remember.

  1. First of all, you have to be respectful of cultures. This country has a rich cultural heritage and possesses a number of religious traditions. Just, for instance, take off your shoes before entering a temple.
  2. Try to blend with the colorful festivals celebrated in this country. If you can fit into any one of the events, it will be a lifetime experience for you. You will definitely feel amazed by the various cultural influences.
  3. If you are going on a trekking or hiking trip then you should always carry a water filter bottle. Clean and purified drinking water might not be available in some remote areas. A portable water filter also removes the possibility of heavy baggage as you do not have to carry extra water bottles.
  4. Before buying anything or taking any means of transport, try to do some research from the locals about the possible prices. This will prevent the chances of your overpaying. If you face any problem of interacting with the locals due to the language problem, check the recommended prices from the internet.
  5. Most of the people in India can understand or interact in English. But it would be really helpful if you learn a few phrases in the local language. For example, if you could say "Namaste" in Hindi instead of a handshake to greet people it would really please the people.
  6. India has an extensive train network that offers you touring facilities at a very cheap rate. Try to have a book of time tables from the railway stations or you can download the required apps on your phone. For instance in Mumbai, m-indicator would be really helpful for all kinds of transport facilities all over the city.
  7. Try to eat from the places where the locals eat. The locals know where the best quality of food is available. Moreover, they would be able to guide you with the types of dishes that would be mouthwatering and region-specific.
  8. Carry an umbrella to save yourself from a downpour. You may catch a cold if you get drenched and in turn, it may ruin your journey. It would be far better if you use a precaution.
  9. Always carry some cash with yourself. Because card or digital payments may not be available if you are traveling to a remote area or buying from a small roadside shop. Indian Government's recent focus on digital and card payments has hugely improved the acceptability of non-cash payments. Online or card transactions are now available in most shops, making it easy for you to roam around cashless. But always keep some cash in your pocket just in case the need arises.
  10. Indians have a very clean sanitary habit. They don't use toilet rolls, so you do have to bring your own toilet roll. Also, there are specific Indian system toilets that you have to adjust yourself in.
  11. It would be better if you purchase an Indian SIM card. It will aid you in case of making emergency calls. Also, you won't face any problems with disrupting mobile networks, unless and until you visit the mountain areas.

  13. Try the street foods in India. There are a variety of mouthwatering delicacies across the streets of the country. From pani puris, kachoris and vada pav to freezing lassis, treat yourself with mouthwatering Indian street foods.
  14. If you are thinking about backpacking throughout India, then autumn would be the best season. Especially if you choose the months from October to December, the climate would just be ideal. It would neither be chilly nor too hot and humid.
  15. If you have a limited span for your trip, you could also take the flights. India offers a cheap and comfortable domestic flight service. Plus it is quite easy to get a ticket due to the frequency of flights available throughout the day.

From the mountains in the north to the vast seas in the south, you are guaranteed to spend some of the best times in your life.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much.
