Oftentimes, Americans get caught up in everything the United States has to offer that they do not leave the country. In fact, the U.S.A has a great amount of places to travel domestically so what’s the point of traveling internationally? Staying within the country requires a lot less planning, and allows people to stay within their comfort zone by not having to learn a new language, or adjust to a new currency and culture. When we listen to the news, most of what we hear are horror stories of what’s happening internationally so much so that the bad exceedingly outweighs the good.
For those who do travel overseas, only 3% of them travel to Africa and less than half of this percentage consists of African Americans. From a young age our negative perception of Africa has been dominated by the narratives of others. Many African-Americans are immensely ignorant in regards to the motherland. Some may simply not care because they do not know their exact roots within the continent, but just because you don’t care to know does not take away the fact that the continent of Africa is a part of your ethnic make-up. Many African-Americans are dignifying the American part of our ethnicity that the African is beginning to just represent the color of our skin. Being ignorant to our own background isn’t hurting anyone but ourselves.
