Back to School as Told by Harry Potter

Because college is practically Hogwarts.

The magical time of year is here once again when students across the nation make their way back to their respective colleges. Heading back to school is always an exciting and new experience, whether it's the first year or the last year in college. While rereading the Harry Potter series this summer, I realized that the students of Hogwarts are very similar to college students. Heading back to your school, magical or otherwise, is an experience of a variety of emotions, but I think that the Hogwarts students can understand it better than anyone else.

1. When you finally get back to 24/7 dining halls

Want to eat pizza and ice cream at three in the morning on a Tuesday night? Knock yourself out.

2. When your professor tells you that attendance is mandatory

What am I even doing in this class? I don't belong here.

3. When you realize that you left your favorite article of clothing back home

Honestly I cannot survive college without my shirt of a pugs face and my Christmas toe socks.

4. When you're reunited with your best friend

Ready to be back together and cause some chaos.

5. When you see someone that you are sorta friends with, but not really

We follow each other on Instagram, so this is obviously a very serious friendship.

6. When you don't sleep the entire first week back because you want to socialize

7. When someone you knew last year comes back to school and they look GOOD

I think I just found my new potential bae for the first weeks of school.

8. When you see freshmen walking around wearing their lanyards

It was cool back in the day when you did it though.

9. When you see your ex on campus

10. When you go to the first big party of the year

11. When you can't get adjusted to being awake for that 8 am class again

12. When you have the sweetest dorm setup on campus and you know it

Everyone is extremely jealous of that awesome Ikea couch you bought.

13. When you go to eat lunch, but you don't know anyone in the dining hall

14. When there's only one open spot in a class, but two people show up to try to fill it

Welcome to the Waitlisted Fight Club.

15. When you and the squad go to the first football game of the year

This is honestly the peak of my school spirit.

16. When you and your best friend are in a class together and the professor says there will be group assignments

17. When your neighbors won't stop partying, but you need to go to sleep

18. When your professor tries to teach an actual lesson on the first day of class

This is not what I signed up for.

19. When you look at how much money you spent on required books

No, it's fine. I guess I don't need clothes or food this semester as long as I have books.

20. When the fire alarm goes off in your dorm in the middle of the night

21. When you know it's going to be another great year with your friends

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
