I have babysat tons of children since I was 14 years old. Each year I have gained a better perspective on babysitting and I have learned how to handle certain situations and problems. Also, I have bettered myself when giving instruction. Kids will push your buttons, test your patience, and challenge you at times, but it's how you handle all of these challenges that make you a good babysitter. Here's a few helpful tips:
1. Stick to your rules
If the child you are babysitting has misbehaved, you should first tell them what they did wrong, and then give them a chance to explain why they misbehaved. After their explanation, inform them on what they should have done. Secondly, when you are punishing the child, stand your ground and do not give in! If you do not get on to them or punish them in some way, they will never learn from their mistakes, and they will more than likely do it again. Lastly, make the child apologize for what they did. This strategy has worked for me.
2. Play fun games and activities with them
What kid doesn't love playing games? All of the kids I have babysat loved playing games and activities, and it kept them busy. My little cousin and I always enjoyed playing cards, board games, such as Sorry and Monopoly, and coloring. Depending on the age of the child, they may prefer other activities.
3. Encourage good behavior
If the child continues to display good behavior, tell them how much you appreciate it. Encouraging them to keep doing the right thing will ensure they are aware of what kind of behavior is expected. I've learned that expressing your gratitude will also let them know that their good behavior did not go unnoticed.
4. Be a great role model
Children look up to you! They are very observant, and their little ears are everywhere. Be cautious of what you say and do around the kid(s). You want to be the best possible role model for them because you would not want them to get in trouble for repeating or doing something that they learned from you. Lead by example.
5. Pay attention and monitor the child
The kid(s) you are babysitting should have your full attention at all times. With infants and toddlers, you should not turn your back on them, not even for a minute. You would not want them to get hurt in any way. Now days, there are young children with cell phones, iPads and tablets. Make sure you monitor what they are doing on their device since they may have access to the internet and other apps. You are responsible for them so try to limit your distractions.
I believe that everything I have learned while babysitting will be helpful when I become a teacher and if I decide to have children one day. I hope my babysitting tips will be useful for you as well. Thanks for reading!
