We've all heard the hype around 1944's Baby It's Cold Outside being considered a song that supports aggressive sexual assault. Hello? Did any of you people actually read the lyrics or do you just automatically assume that because the man is trying to persuade the woman to stay that sex is on his mind?
I know that in today's social climate or lack thereof, I should say, a man can simply say hello to a woman and she's ready to say that she was assaulted.
The song was written 1944 and it was a different time. There were actual GENTLEMEN back then and not all of them were looking to get their girlfriends into bed before marriage. The women didn't look around every corner thinking they were going to get raped or assaulted.
We have no actual context of the song other than the fact the woman says that she has to go, and her mother will worry, and her father will be pacing the floor. Are the two a couple? I would think so with the way the chatter is going back and forth between the two.
The man in the song is trying his best to get the girl to stay because it is indeed snowing and freezing outside, but it's not like he's tying her to a chair to keep her with him. He is obviously concerned for her well being rather than getting lucky.
Quite frankly if the woman really wanted to leave, she could do just that. He's not holding her hostage or threatening her with anything. Instead, she is making excuses not to leave either. Maybe just half a drink more, or maybe a cigarette more.
Clearly, she wants to stay as well but, in the era that the song was written such things were considered to be inappropriate for unmarried people. It was considered a scandal for the girl's family and shameful to her parents.
This day in age, people are offended by everything. You can't even offer someone a cough drop without them getting snooty. We aren't allowed to just walk up to total strangers and start a conversation. It's offensive.
People just look for things to be offended by, like this song, Baby It's Cold Outside isn't a date rape or an aggressive sexual assault song. It's a Christmas song and I have been listening to it for years.
Seriously, stop picking on this song. It doesn't imply rape or a sexual assault. It's cheeky and cute and deserves more respect than all these OFFENDED people are giving it. Dean Martin's daughter says that she will keep performing this song even though so many people find the song to be offensive.
Can we all just grow up and stop finding things to be offended about!? We all sound like a bunch of whiney babies. Before long there is going to be no social interaction at all because we're all going to stay inside our protective bubbles and stop talking to one another.
We're getting to a point of ridiculousness. If we keep heading in this direction as a society before too long, we're going to find the sun offensive. So, can we please just grow up already?!
