How Baby Animals Can Distract You From Your Studies

Thirteen animals to look up when you are procrastinating from studies. Bonus, there are a few video recommendations in there.

In my first year of college, I have learned that there are three wonderful things to do if you want to procrastinate writing that essay for your class that is due tomorrow or studying for that midterm you have later this week: eating (because you can’t possibly focus on work if you are eating a delicious burger), sleeping, and, best of all, watching videos or looking pictures up of cute animals.

I typically look up stuff about baby animals playing or sleeping, just because they are so cute. Anyway, since classes are starting to get busier, and with spring break coming up, I'll share my top 13 cute animals and maybe you'll get a few suggestions for videos in this grand reveal.

1. Foxes

Oh my gosh, just look at this fox cub. He is so freaking adorable! There are several different things I love about foxes. I think their best quality is their eyes. There are tons of different wolf species, which means several different types of eyes that range from bright yellow to ice cold blue to coal grey eyes. Also, they make an adorable sound. Just look it up sometime.

2. Otters

Otters are too cute. When the adults sleep together in the water, they hold hands. Otters are probably my favorite high-pitched squeaking animals. Something about their tininess as a baby, and their seriousness as an adult makes me happier than one could imagine. If you look up 'Baby Otters Nature's Original Squeaky Toys' on YouTube, I don't think you'll be able to resist their cuteness.

3. Cats

I honestly love cats, but have never had one. That hasn't stopped me from trying to steal my friends' cats though. Their fur is so soft and the purring -- someone save me. Cats are completely enticing when they show affection towards you. If they are grumpy old cats, it is fun to tease them. Look up 'Cat vs. Cucumber' and you'll see what I mean by fun.

4. Bears

Oh, the big and scary bears that no one should ever want as a pet, and couldn't possibly be cute, are freaking captivating. How could one not want to go up to this bear and cuddle with it? Of course it is dangerous, but that doesn't change the fact that this bear looks perfect for cuddling. They can be friendly too! Look up "Kodiak Bear Waving."

5. Red Pandas

With the amount of videos I have watched with red pandas, it is safe to say that I am very, very obsessed with them. They look like foxes. Their coat is beautiful. Here is a fun fact for you: red pandas are not actually that closely related to pandas or raccoons, but are part of their own phylogenetic family. If you need more proof that red pandas are cute look up "Red Panda Surprised by Zookeeper." You will not regret it.

6. Pandas

Just look at them! They are so tiny compared to the huge animal they will become. In all reality, I wish I could have the panda cuddling job. It would be such a joy, but I think you'd have to watch them pretty closely because they will do some pretty dumb things, like fall out of trees and roll down a hill and not have the ability to get up the hill. I don't have any good suggestions of videos because they are all fabulous.

7. Dogs

Puppies! Probably the only animals I will ever own in my lifetime! Dogs are the best pet, in my opinion. They are loyal and playful. They may do some terrible things, (i.e. tear up your books or steal your socks), but it is hard not to love them. Especially when they are sleeping and start dreaming. Their paws start moving and sometimes they'll bark. It is just like sleep talking. Look some videos of them up!

8. Polar Bears

Polar bears have become a recent obsession since the cub was abandoned by it's mother at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. They released a video documenting how it had grown up in 83 days. They are dangerous animals, but playful and a good animal to own when it is just a child. But I wouldn't recommend that... no matter how much I want a polar bear.

9. Ferrets

Ferrets to me, when owned by someone, are kind of like puppies...but sneakier. They like to steal things and run off with them. Don't believe me? Look up "Ferrets Stealing" and you'll see what I am talking about. Other than that, they are just darling and I really want one.

10. Bats

Bats! The tinier the bats are, the cuter. There are many fabulous qualities to them. If you have bats as a pet, they cling to you which is super adorable. But if you don't have them as a pet and they are still in your house, that could be a major issue since they are very elusive. By very I mean, "Haha! You are never going to catch that thing."

11. Cheetahs

Cheetahs are my favorite of the feline family. As babies they are little balls of fur that cuddle with their family. When they grow up they are probably the most badass cat out there, in my opinion. They are ferocious while still looking like models. I admire them for their beauty, not for their ability to pounce on prey.

12. Kangaroos

One of the main reasons why I like Kangaroos is because of that silly movie I watched growing up called "Kangaroo Jack." It was one of my favorites as a kid, but now I can't even stand to watch it. Kangaroos, in general, are adorable, especially the baby ones. They just fit right in the pouch and are good to go. Also, when they are babies, their feet are enormous compared to the rest of their body. That always makes me giggle.

13. Sloths

I kid you not, sloths are my favorite animal and most likely the animal I would most want to be like. Sleep most of the day, crawl really slowly, great tree climbing skills, and the most adorable squeak in the world. I just want to hold them! To be honest though, if they were able to move faster and weren't as lazy, they'd be able to cause some serious damage. For a good video, look up "Super Cute Sloth Squeak!"

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
