Just under two months ago, Azealia Banks was in media spotlight for her racist and homophobic tweets to and about Zayn Malik. Banks attacked Malik with no provocation and when he replied to her negative comments, she replied in a wild frenzy that resembled that of a 13-year-old rather than the 25-year-old that she is. This sparked so much public outrage because not only did Banks insult Malik, but she insinuated that the United States was in favor of her xenophobic comments stating "When your entire extended family has been obliterated by good ol the U.S of A will you still be trying to act like a white boy pretending to be black?"
This child, because that's what she seems to be, was given way too much leeway to spread her negativity over social media and received so much publicity for her immature attacks on innocent people. This one-sided Twitter war seemed so pointless and just plain stupid that it doesn't seem like much else than a publicity stunt. Following her attack on Zayn Malik, who is younger than her but behaved with much more decorum than she did, Banks attempted to get her talons into 14-year-old-Skai Jackson, all because she came to the defense of Malik. When someone who is supposedly an adult attacks a child for stating their opinion, their sanity, self-esteem and manners in general come into question. The question is why do people even care about Azealia Banks anymore? She's reminds me of a mosquito buzzing in your ear-annoying and distracting and only around to hurt you and others.
In more recent news, Banks has publicized her use of the skin whitening cream Whitenicious. Who cares? When do we say enough is enough? Banks was criticized for using skin-bleaching products to lighten her skin because of the controversy behind skin lightening and whitening. Banks stated that, "I don't really think it's important to discuss the cultural significance of skin bleaching anymore because I think that, just as African-American people, just as black people in this world, you assimilate..." Excuse me, what? Since when have we encouraged assimilation? Except for some drastic circumstances where people have had to and sometimes still have to assimilate for their survival, being unique and accepting the skin you were born is encouraged over anything else. And in the 21st century no less! Come on Banks, you can do yourself a world of good if only you would just not speak or type or write at all because it seems you have your words and history confused.
Banks then went on to say, "I consider anything that has to do with removing layers of skin or pigment, I consider it all bleaching...I say lightening." Big freaking whoop Azealia Banks, your use of semantics impresses me so little. Banks' argument has so many holes in it it's a wonder someone hasn't sat her down and helped her understand that she's wrong on multiple levels.
It all comes down to Azealia Banks acting as a distraction from all the important things that are happening in the world. There's too much social injustice that needs our attention for us to waste our time with this little girl that doesn't have an ounce of timing and doesn't think before she types. Instead of using your precious time to try and find the sense in Azealia Banks' arguments tune in to the news. While someone is deciphering Banks' nonsensical ramblings on social media, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling were shot and killed by police, five officers were killed in Dallas and over 198 protesters in New York City, Baton Rouge, and St. Paul, Minnesota were arrested for protesting police shootings.
Again I ask, why is Azealia Banks even a blip on our radar at this point? Banks has the right to do whatever she wants with her body and until she starts liking herself she will continue to spew out words of hatred to the nearest bystander. We give more power to people like her when we make it seem like we care about what they do. A word of advice to all my readers, stop paying attention to Banks because her little-girl tantrum is just plain embarrassing and will just distract you from everything that matters in the world. On that note, I have spent entirely too much time discussing Azealia Banks. Time to think about some people that are actually worth my time.
