The Awkward Truth About Looking For A Roommate

You've been staring at the mailbox for weeks wondering when it would come, and praying that it would be a big one and not a small one because everybody knows what it means when you get the small one. You finally get that BIG envelope in the mail and you're basically screaming with excitement because you're going to college.

Now that you know where you're going and you can let go of all the stress and anxiety of wondering, it's time to get to the fun stuff. Of course, you immediately order a ton of school gears, but the most exciting part and the most awkward part is looking for a roommate.

It's like Tinder, but for school

Yep, you read that right. It can sometimes feel like you're pimping yourself out to a group of strangers. You say things like "I love to go out, but schools super important to me" so they don't think you're an over the top partier or "I really want a roommate who will go to the gym with me" so you seem really fit and healthy even though you just ate an entire bag of chips before typing that sentence.

You Get Stood Up

So you've been talking to this girl for like 3 weeks and this whole time you're thinking "This girl is awesome, we have so much in common" and then all of a sudden she messages you and says she's rooming with someone else... yeah, it hurts.

It Gets Personal

I mean really personal. If all works out, you'll be living with this person for 9 months so you want to know exactly what you're getting yourself into. Sure it starts out light "Where are you from?" "What are your hobbies?" and then suddenly it's "What's your biggest fear?" "Do you have any abnormal habits?" "Are you one of those people who only eats baby food?"

When Everyone Starts Picking their Roommate and You're Still Looking

Remember when you thought looking for a roommate was going to be fun and exciting? Yea, well now it's like waiting for that acceptance letter again. Suddenly it seems like everyone already has a roommate and you are the only one still looking. You've been stood up by the girl you thought was going to be 'the one,' had to politely say no when the girl who never plans on going to class asks you to be her roommate, and have been disappointed by everyone else you've talked to. So much for the excitement, right?

Don't get me wrong, I've loved looking for a roommate, but someone could have warned me how weird it would be!

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
