Giving tours on a college campus can be the most rewarding job, but also the hardest sometimes. Prospective students can ask some pretty awkward questions, but parents can make things even more awkward on tours. Here are some things I or my colleagues have awkwardly encountered.
1.That awkward moment when a mom asks you how the dorm parties are on campus.
- Well ma'am, we are a small private college with only 1,700 students and we don't party in our dorms. Do you think we are a state school or something?
2. I mentioned that I was the football recruiting secretary on a campus tour once and a mom looked at me and said, "They choose the cute ones don't they?" referring to me in my position. Then she proceeded to tell me "That you must show them a good time, huh?" *insert wink here*.
3. I had a coworker get asked what the drug of choice was on campus.
- His answer was prime. "Caffeine!" A great and funny way to skirt around the bush, but the mom noticed and said, "No, but really?"
4. I've had a mom ask me if I was truly here to get a degree or if I was here for my "Mrs." Degree.
- The 60:40 female to male ratio here is not exactly in my favor. My husband sure as heck is not going to be from my school, and that sure is not the reason why I am here.
5. When a prospective student asks you what the party scene on campus is like...
- You just have to avoid this one at all costs, because even though you know they'll find out at one point, their parents will not appreciate you being the one to tell them.
6. When a mom does not understand the statement, "We are still a college campus" when trying to explain that we are not a dry campus, and alcohol is still a thing on campus.
These are only a few awkward things that have happened and I’m sure there will always be the next awkward moment to top the last.
