Get away from the world with a good book.

There are those days when you just want to get away. There are days when everything is going wrong and you just want to go into another world and lead a different life, or just get away from the stress for a bit. It is hard to find a way to get away, but I have found my solace in books. You can grab any book off of the shelf and it takes you into an entirely new world, with different characters, times and settings. Currently, I am reading a romantic murder mystery based in Alaska. As soon as I open the book, I feel like I am right there, in the midst of all the action going on and watching the mystery unravel as if I was the detective myself. Reading overcomes me, and I get so caught up in my book that I forget that my world exists. When I am stressed, I just open my book. When I am bored or tired, I just open my book. Reading is so good for my soul and makes my heart and mind happy. I suggest you give it a try if you haven’t already, and don’t be afraid to be open to new books and new ideas. I just wanted to share with you guys the book challenge I am trying to do this summer, and give you a few of my favorite books that will hopefully help get you started on your journey to a happier, less stressful life.

The one I just finished was called “If I Run” and it took my interest in the first few sentences. I immediately wanted to know why she was running away from the police if she hadn’t killed her boyfriend. I also suggest the book “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” which is and always will be one of my favorite books of all time. I read this book in just a few short hours in high school, and this was the book that got me into reading and made me realize all the stuff out there that we can read. And for you sappy romantics, I suggest reading “Me Before You,” and if you don’t cry by the end of it, please let me know because I bawled. And a perk of this is that you could see it in theater as soon as you’re done (but sometimes this ruins the book. It’s a game of chance).

If you’re not sure what to read, go to your library and use a few of these as a random picking of what to read:

A book with a blue cover.

A book that was published in 2016.

Find an author with the first letter of H, then pick a book from that section.

Read a romantic novel (you can’t not read these).

Open a book and read the first sentence, and the first book that grabs you, read it.

I hope you all enjoy a life of reading and that it makes you feel great about yourself, and gives you a chance to get away from the hectic lives that we lead. Read on and escape.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
