In high school, pretty much everyone talks about leaving their hometown and going away for college. While it sounds so good to escape from your hometown for four years and move away, no one ever talks about the friends that you leave behind. Some friends leave and some stay in their hometown. Yes, a lot of people don’t keep in touch with their high school friends after graduation, but in rare instances, some people are lucky enough to keep their best friends even when they move away.

While it is great to branch out in college and make other best friends, your hometown best friends are on another level. No one quite understands you as well as the people who grew up with you and went to high school with you. They were there for you when you went through your first breakup and saw you are your best and worst. Having a best friend group in your hometown sometimes makes it hard to go away for college.

While you are away at college, there are five things you can count on your hometown best friends for.

1. They keep you up to date on all the gossip back home.

Your best friends make sure that you know what everyone is doing in your hometown. They ensure that you are in the know with who is dating who and what everyone who went to school with you is doing. You can always count on hearing the latest gossip from them.

2. They ask you about your life away from your hometown.

Even though you are away at school, your best friends still want to know what is going on in your life. They'll ask you all kinds of questions about your classes and your social life. They want to make sure that you are making the best of your time away from your hometown.

3. They stalk you.

Whether it's on Snapchat or Instagram, your best friends back home are the first to ask you who the guy in the picture is or why you were at the library on a Saturday night. You can count on them to keep tabs on you while you are away. Sometimes it a tad creepy how fast they ask questions about what you were doing, but you know that is just because they are your besties and want to know about your life.

4. Their lives will go on without you.

Even though you are best friends, their lives will go on and they will change, just like you will. They'll grow closer as a friend group. While you are away, they will hang out without you. You will miss out on some great times, but they will be sure to tell you all about it the next day. Sometimes you will have major FOMO, but you can ensure that you are still a valued member of the group.

5. They'll always be there for you.

No matter how far away you are, whether it's two or ten hours, your friends will always be there for you. They'll be there when you experience heartbreak or happiness. You can count on them to reply to your text messages and give their advice when needed. When you do get to go home, you better believe that the whole group will get together. If it's only been a week or even months since you've seen them, you will all pick up right where you left off and make more memories together.
