10 Best Things About Going Away For College

Just a little over a year ago, I found myself making the all important decision of where I was going to get my education for the next four years. This is a huge decision, but what I finally decided changed my life forever, for the better. When I decided to go away for college, I immediately found out I had made one of the best decisions I had ever made. Of course, going away to college is not for everyone. But for those who do, or those thinking about possibly embarking on that journey, I'd like to share a couple of things this experience has in store for you. Here are the ten best things about going away for college.

1.You get to experience something different than your hometown.

Sure, growing up in your hometown was great. I mean, it's really all you've ever known. But it's time for a change. Exploring and especially living in a new place is a new and exciting experience you have to have.

2. You get a taste of independence

Your entire life you've been living by the rules of your parents. Not that that is a bad thing, but when you finally get to call the shots, it feels good! You get to decide how you want to live your life. Even though you probably still need the help and guidance of your family, at least for a while you get a tiny taste of the grown-up world.

3. You can leave any previous drama behind you

You basically get to start your life over when you start a new chapter in a different place. Whether you had fights, a not so good year, or just anything undesirable, you are able to leave it behind.

4. Everyone misses you while you're gone

As the saying goes "absence makes the heart grown fonder". This couldn't be truer if you go away to college. You'll get a ton of "I miss you when are you coming home?". It feels good to be missed.

5. Meet amazing new people

Some of the most amazing people you'll ever meet in your life come from your college! These great people will make your experience at college worthwhile. And you make some best friends for life.

6. Learn so much about yourself

When you're forced to be on your own and make your decisions, you start to realize a lot of things about yourself you never knew before. Like how much you love to take walks by yourself at sunset, or how you like to study in the library instead of your room. You find yourself in college.

7. Everything is right there

Whether it be your source of food or a quiet place to do your homework, it is all right there on your campus. So everything is a lot easier to get done.

8. You get the best of both worlds

You get to live in the area of your school and your hometown. You reap the benefits of both.

9. Your college best friend's family becomes your family

This is super important especially if you go really far from home. Not being able to see your family all the time is really hard, but being basically adopted by your best friend's family makes it so much more bearable. They really get you through the college days and help you feel at home.

10. It is super fun!

Above all, going away to college is one of the best experiences you can have. There's so much fun to be had. It is so worth it

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
