I am going to come right out and say it. I am not the biggest Childish Gambino fan. I love Donald Glover as an actor, stand-up comedian, producer, and person, but I always felt that his rapping alter ego was highly overrated. I liked a lot of his songs but I could never understand how some people called him their favorite rapper.
He was always the rapper people loved if they didn't listen to hip-hop.
But there was still no way I wasn't going to listen to his latest project, "Awaken, My Love!"
I got home that Thursday night late from celebrating a good friend's birthday. I crawled into bed and pushed play.
The next 49 minutes left me speechless.
To be honest, I was getting a little anxious on my first listen through. I was 20 minutes in and still hadn't heard Gambino rap, not a single bar. But then I abandoned all my preconceptions of what a Gambino album should sound like. It was something different and beautiful.
It's hard to even put this album into a genre. Soul, funk and R&B influences can be seen throughout the work of art.
Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the album.
Redbone
The song everyone is talking about. It comes right after "Riot" which is a chaotic song with so much going on in it. You can hear the contrast immediately when the electronic kick comes in and then you're on a five and a half minute psychedelic trip through Gambino's mind. It's simple repetition makes you feel like you've known this song for years. Like it's one of your mom's oldies that she would play in the car after picking you up from elementary school. I have shown this song to so many people from multiple generations and it's a song that you can appreciate no matter where you come from.
The intro "Me and Your Mama"
Tell me this doesn't sound like you just got thrown into a dream. So peaceful and serene to start until that is all interrupted with the second half which turns into a rock sound.
Gambino's voice is beautiful
Baby Boy is probably my favorite song on the album, even though that has changed just about every day. It's hard to believe that it's Gambino singing on this song. He shows so much emotion as he talks about his new born son. He even has a Frank Ocean-esque sound to him in the final track, "Stand Tall." His voice takes on many forms in throughout the album.
The album is great. It made extremely excited to see what else this man is capable of because at this point, I don't think there is anything Donald Glover can't do. I give the album a B+.
