The things that keep us up at night
aren't monsters under the bed
but those deep in the mind.
They are blinded during the day;
deafened by the noise generated by bustling cities,
the wind blowing through fields, and the cracking of crunched sand between toes.
But once the sounds settle and silence surrounds us,
the creatures crawl out of hiding and storm our souls
as we lay awake—sleepless
Sleep stretched too far away to reach.
If only the darkness didn't dampen our spirits,
maybe then we could defeat the wicked beings yearning for optimism, naivety, happiness.
Eyes blinking, lungs breathing, and no chance of rest
as there are too many complexities at hand rushing through our bodies—
dark energy.
