Avril Lavigne’s 'Head Above Water' Is A Worship Song That No One Expected

In This Article:

Avril Lavigne has always been a pop and rock n' roll type of artist. So, her new song "Head Above Water" has people in shock.

After a five year absence, the Canadian singer is making a comeback with her emotional song that tells of her struggle with Lyme Disease.

Lavigne stated,

“I thought I was dying and had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, 'God, please help to keep my head above the water.' At that moment, the songwriting of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on."

Lavigne's new album was expected to be released in 2017, but she decided to put a hold on it because of its personal importance. Lavigne's fight with Lyme disease has impacted many people on the importance of the disease.

Lavigne wrote that the inspiration for her song was through her battling this disease but also seeing others that she cared for battle it and have hardships through it. She thanked her fans for her patience through this difficult time in her life and stated, “Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I'm really proud of."

With the song “Head Above Water" Lavigne expresses throughout it how she has put her trust in God and she needs God to save her. The tick-borne illness left her bedridden for five months and not left to do much of anything. During this time period, Lavigne wrote songs in her bed and on the couch due to pain.

Lavigne is hoping to help others with her upcoming album. She has started a foundation, which is raising money to fight back against Lyme Disease. Specifically, helping others suffering from the disease get access to treatment that they otherwise would be unable to afford.

Avril Lavigne's journey is something most people don't have to go through. Lavigne sharing her experience with Lyme Disease has given everyone an eye opener on what it is and how it affects people. Brave, is an understatement when it comes to Lavigne continuing to fight when she could have easily given up.

Lavigne's story has not only impacted me but also many others with her new song, “Head Above Water" and also, her fighting story against Lyme Disease.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
