How to Avoid the Sunday "Scaries"

As I am sure we can all relate, the Sunday following a big game day weekend is the absolute worst and the most anxiety provoking time of our college lives. It is when the libraries are chalk full of people cramming, the workout you had scheduled is painfully executed and the hangover is continually bumming you out and pushing you closer and closer to your bed. I can definitely relate…and I’m here to help, coming down from Friday and Saturday does have to be all that bad.

Conquer the Sunday Scaries

  • Take a Shower, sometimes just a good cry in the shower will rejuvenate you and get you ready for the day! Also, you are probably gross, go for that squeaking clean look instead.
  • Delay Delay Delay! Delaying the onset of responsibilities, while yes this is procrastination, it is good for your mental health to involve yourself with an activity, my personal favorite, is brunch. It is like a free pass to skip the hours from 10-2, where your body is still in shock from the night before. It is definitely a necessity to the recovery process.
  • Watch something that will make you happy, but only two episodes worth or you might just waste your entire day watching a season of The Office, Shameless or Narcos.
  • Start small and tackle one nagging task so at the end of the day you feel you have accomplished something. Take out the trash, water your plants, write a thank you letter, pet your dog, just do something.
  • Go to church, I’m sure everyone would be happy to have you there.
  • Go get your nails done! Girls, I don’t know about you but I can contest that getting a good manicure and pedicure makes me feel like a million bucks and always turns my day around.
  • OK, I know this might sound lame, but bake a cake or pastry item. It is so fun and relatively easy, plus the decorating is the epitome of joyfulness.
  • Working out (or going to Omni and sitting in the sauna) is also a great way to sweat the toxins out of your body and produce endorphins. Just don’t forget to drink a ton of water or you will definitely pass out.
  • Call your best friend. Okay, there are rules for this one, she must be your best friend, your person, no judgment, going to be in your life forever kind of best friend. If these qualities don’t apply, don’t call them with your sob story, it might just push them further away from you.

My personal solution: Paint your own nails to save money, put on your favorite record, apply a face mask and text your mom—sometimes she has the best and only advice you are willing to listen to. Although I have grown to love Sunday’s again, it is still hard to avoid the impending week that lies ahead and the feeling that your “fun” time is running out. The best things to do are, reset and get yourself excited for the weekend to come once again.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
