4 Tips To Avoid Looking Like A Stereotypical Freshman Walking Through Campus

In This Article:

Your freshman year of college can be an exciting AND scary time in your life. While we all know that college is a whole different ballgame compared to high school, you may still want to know how to 'fit in' with your university. College is a time in your life where you're allowed to start over and be whoever you want to be. However, you want to make sure you aren't trying too hard or looking like the stereotypical "freshmeat." These are some basic tips you can follow to make sure you don't overdo it when it comes to breaking in the school year.

1. NEVER wear your lanyard and your college card around your neck

I'm just going to tell you right now; this is the one thing you will get judged for on campus. Usually, college students are pretty laid back and judgement-free when it comes to things other students do or wear. But wearing your college lanyard around your neck is going to make you stand out as THAT freshman. Even if you did decide to do this, you would realize after your first day of classes that it wasn't the best idea. Having a lanyard to hold your card is fine, but you might want to keep it in a pocket of your backpack. Or, a lot of students have a little pouch on the back of their phones that they keep cards in!

2. Don't even think about wearing your old high school gear

I think it's totally acceptable to wear a high school t-shirt when you're working out in a gym or if you're on a run, but it's probably not the best idea to wear them around campus. It makes it look like you're stuck in the past; especially if you wear your letterman jacket! Once your in college, nobody cares how many championships you've won or how many times you made the varsity team. Sure, your old high school jackets and sweatshirts may be warm and comfy, but wear them in private.

3. Don't try to dress too nice

The last thing you want to do is walk around campus in your nicest clothes. Sure, it's nice to dress up and feel 'fancy' sometimes, but that's not required on a college campus. Almost every single girl walks around in an oversized t-shirt, nike shorts or leggings, and casual shoes. It's rare that you see a girl in a dress or with her makeup and hair done perfectly. Especially if you have early classes (like me), you'll realize that putting in all that effort isn't worth it when you are just going to a few classes. There really isn't anybody to impress.

4. Get to class on time, but not early

If you're stressed about finding all your classes like I was, I would recommend going to find the classrooms before the first day of classes. You could easily grab a few people from your hall and go explore your campus! This will make you feel so much better before your first day of going to classes. This will also help you avoid being super early to your classes. Some classrooms really aren't that difficult to find, and you might have left your dorm 30 minutes early just so you could find it. Now, you're super early to your first day, and that could be awkward.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
