Average Is Just Right

How my average lifestyle was exactly what I needed

I have always thought of myself as being rather average. I live in an average-sized house, with an average-sized family. My grades were usually B's (which is barely better than average), my talents are about average, I don't excel in anything, and I don't really fail at anything either. However, my average lifestyle is beyond perfect in my eyes! Here are 7 reasons why being "average" can be exceptional.

1. Your house was just the right size.

There were never too many rooms to clean, nor was it too cramped for your family. It was the perfect fit!

2. Having a family of four seemed just right.

You always thought about what it would be like to have another sibling, but in reality, having only one sibling to fight with was alright with you. You had your parents, yourself, and an extra. Just right!

3. Your grades were never perfect, but you didn't fail either.

You made it through high school with a B average (and a D in chemistry)...Once you got into college, though, you realized that it didn't matter that you didn't have straight A's in high school. It probably made things easier for you, because when you got a C on the first test of the semester, you were actually pretty proud of yourself.

4. You couldn't really participate in the school talent show, but you weren't a total failure.

You knew how to play an instrument, you could draw more than stick figures (but not much more), and you could never win American Idol (but the people next to you didn't have bleeding ear drums when you sang). You probably know what it's like to be doing a group project at school and being recruited as the artist even though you weren't that good.

5. You grew up in a rather average-size town.

It's not as small as some places, but it isn't too big. You know your way around, and you know most of the people in the community (though there are still some people you don't know).

6. The people were somewhat average.

Just about everybody has their own idea of fashion, and what you wear reflects your personality. For some, to feel normal in today's society, it's head-to-toe camo, for others, glitter and glam. Give me jeans and a t-shirt any day!

7. The food was rarely fast food, but even more rarely a five-star meal.

Some people survive on fast food, usually McDonalds, or in a pinch, Taco Bell. (Does a deer hit at 70 MPH qualify as "fast food"?) Others eat at five-star, six-course, cloth napkin, dimly-lit, over-priced restaurants. The average of the two would probably be Denny's, typically at midnight, to get strength to continue studying.

Just like Goldie Locks, you have to find what is right for you. For many, the "Too Hot", or "Too Cold" and the "Too Soft" or "Too Hard" extremes in life can be stressful and daunting. But for me...my life happens to be JUST RIGHT, and I couldn't be happier!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
