Now more than ever, girls are under pressure to look a certain way, fit a "body-type", or a jean size. Social media isn't kind in the slightest, especially if confidence isn't your strong-suit. Sure, your feed is perfectly curated and approved, but there is no controlling what others post of you. What some would find cute, funny, or "just you" could be embarrassing for you, and it's there forever.
These kinds of posts aren't usually done with malicious intent, but they can still hurt. Not everyone is confident in their skin at every angle. In reality, most women aren't.
To the girls who are confident, good for you! Keep doing you! Never let anyone tell you different. Use your power to lift up others. The world is cruel, so girls need to support girls. Empower each other!
To the girls who spend hours staring at a selfie, picking out every flaw and imperfection, you're not alone! With that being said, there's only one person who has to love you. YOU! You're beautiful no matter shape, size, or race! Love who you are as a person. Integrity is prettier than appearance everyday.
But now, more than ever, there has been a movement to love the real you. Women are vulnerable, emotional, bossy, sassy, and so much more. Be you and don't be ashamed of it! We were all created to be special. These traits add a little flavor to life.
Music has always been a large influence in my life. I love to discover new artists, try new dances and instruments, and sing at the top of my lungs. My Spotify has a bunch of playlists specifically designed for the mood I am in. I have one specific artist who is featured in every single mix. She is a force to be reckoned with and calls life how she sees it. There is one icon women (and men) everywhere can look to: Lizzo.
Most people only know her for singles such as "Truth Hurts" and "Good as Hell," but she has so much more to offer. I'll admit the songs were shoved down our throats by radio stations. Those aren't the songs I'm primarily talking about, but if you have a minute, sit down and really listen to the lyrics. She's all about knowing your self-worth and empowerment.
Her songs focus on self-love and positivity in all walks of life. The number on a scale doesn't define you, your actions do. If you really listen to the words she is singing, your heart bleeds a little and your soul is set on fire. You can feel her passion and love for others. Everyone is important and has something unique they can bring to the table.
So, the next time you're feeling down about yourself, listen to Lizzo's album, "Cuz I Love You." My personal favorite empowerment anthem is "Scuse Me." Really listen, because I can guarantee you'll smile, dance around the room, and feel like a queen.
Remember, life can be brutal, and the only way we survive is the love and support of others. Hype each other up and love all (including yourself) with no reservations.
