In the last few days, approximately 50 people including your favorite 90s TV Sitcom Aunt have been indicted in a massive college cheating scandal. These people decided that their children didn't need to work hard to get into a college like the rest of us. So to all the Aunt Beckys out there, here are 10 other ways you can get your kid into college without committing a crime!
(If you are behind on the recent news, please click here.)
1. Tutor them
Help you kid with their homework or find someone who can. There are tutoring services everywhere!
2. Make them take SAT Classes
Studying and practicing before the test can make a huge difference! Spending Saturday mornings at the local community college taking prep classes will help your child perform better.
3. Encourage them to ACTUALLY participate in extracurricular activities
Extracurriculars won't fix bad grades, but they sure do help you develop as a person. Clubs, sports and other activities help spruce up an application.
4. Let them make mistakes
They might get incredibly low scores on their first attempt at the SATs. That's why they're allowed to take them as many times as they'd like!
5. Let your child lead the college application process
Encourage your child to create a list of schools, apply to them and realize the requirements they will need to meet to get into their dream school.
6. Show your child that hard work is and will always be more important than money
Money can't buy everything.
7. Realize that state schools are great options too
There is nothing wrong with your kid attending a state school. They offer great programs at lower prices.
8. Accept the fact that your kid may not be destined for college
Not everyone is meant to go to college! There are plenty of other great career options.
9. Teach your child morals
Teach them to be truthful people. Employers would much rather have a moral employee with a degree from "_______ State College" than someone who cheated their way through the system with a undeserved degree from USC.
10. DON'T BUY YOUR KID'S WAY INTO A COLLEGE
I thought this was needless to say, but apparently not. Sorry Aunt Becky, but a "Full House" heart-to-heart and hug isn't going to fix this.
