August: The Sunday Night Of Summer
Paws in Training

We all recall the moments when summer began, when the winds of procrastination rolled in. Out flew the worries about school and work. All of the blissful woe including day drinks, beach and pool days, and late nights, seemed like they'd last forever. That is, until the dreaded month of August struck. Though the weather seems the same, there is something so eerie that comes along with the month of August, that I think of this month as the Sunday night of summer.

Assuming that we've all been students- we know that whatever assignments are given for the weekend get pushed aside until Sunday. And because Sunday's are for lounging in our pajamas all day, or working, the truer statement would be, our assignments are left for Sunday night. This goes for all students of all ages and skill levels… We've all done it. So, when I was younger, I used to think of the entire month of August as that moment, as Sunday night. With “Summer Reading”, everyone knows that no matter when you started, there was always too much to be done in too little time before school inevitably began again. We stayed up 48 hours straight to finish the four assigned chapters of reading that we would be tested on come day one, or we were giving ourselves time to process the reading and left the essay until the moments before school was to begin. Sunday nights are stressful, as is the reality of school starting again, or the preparation for a workweek beginning. All of these put a damper on our fun. For August, it is the reality of knowing that good weather and good vibes will be less apparent, sunshine shorter, and work and school unbearable.

My advice as a veteran of experiencing this “Sunday Night” month is to enjoy as much of it as you can, because the final Sunday night of Summer will come and go before we know it, and whether we like it or not. August is upon us people, it's time to soak up every last bit of summer!

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
