5 reasons we all hate All American Weekend

As many of you know, this weekend is All American Weekend, which basically means that the campus will be filled with people. The university is hosting a bunch of different events to entertain parents, guests, and even alumni. In the end, it's really just supposed to draw attention to the great things that AU does for its students so parents can rest assured that they made the right choice. On top of that, it's to get alumni and guests to donate to the university. Let's be real for second, education has become a business, and in order for AU to remain competitive, it needs to get money in any way it can. In no way am I bashing the university, since that money will go to benefit its students in some way; however, $60,000 per student does seem more than enough to cover everything. Anyway, let's get to the fun part; 5 things we all hate (or will hate) about this weekend.

1. Parents

As you may have noticed, there have been a lot of random people on campus, they're mostly parents of freshman. You may find some wandering around campus like headless chickens, they may stop you and ask for directions. I was in the elevator the other day and some people were talking about All American Weekend and how their parents were coming, they asked me if mine were coming. I politely informed them that I would not torture my parents by having them be here when nearly every freshman's parents were here.

2. Random Events

As I said before, there will be events going on all weekend. If you're not a freshman, you probably have no idea when or where these events are happening. Because of this, you may find that your favorite study spots may be taken over by hordes of people trying to attend some random event.

3. Lines

Due to the large influx of people upon the campus this weekend, you may find the lines in your favorite locations to be much longer. It would be safe to say that Starbucks, Subway, Megabytes, and the Eagle's Nest (POD) will all have lines pretty much all weekend. These lines will not compare to the lines you may find at Disney, but they will be just as annoying.

4. Getting Looked at Funny

As you walk around campus, like any normal person would, you may get looked at by parents. Some of them will look at you really weirdly, almost as if you caught "the ugly."

5. Emails

Like me, you probably delete any email that appears to be the usual junk that the university dishes out to everyone on campus. This past week alone, we probably all received a little extra mail to make us feel extra special about All American Weekend. Either way, it's just plain annoying. You want to know why Hillary deleted 30,000 emails? It's probably because it was all junk mail from AU.

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
