In today's day and age, being in college is difficult. Add in being a girl in a sorority to the mix and it gets so much harder.
Having a bad attitude about things in life seems to be a common trend in college students. Whether it's waking up for that 8 a.m. at 7 so you're not late, or being required to go to mandatory events for greek life, clubs, or even meeting for academics— often times it is easy to slip into this mindset of negativity.
There are several things that can play into this negativity we sometimes experience. A huge influencer of bad attitudes tends to be the people we surround ourselves with.
Often times, individuals have bad attitudes and we don't even realize it. Negativity is toxic. There are two major ways we can see these toxic characteristics I others and ourselves that typically go unnoticed.
1. Self-defeat talking
A very common toxic trait is talking down to yourself. Saying things such as "I'm going to fail" or "I look so fat in this shirt" are prime examples of this. Rather than making leaps to change these things, we put ourselves down.
Would you intentionally surround yourself with someone who makes you feel inferior or lesser of a person? Probably not.
Self-defeat talking is creating a whole other identity within yourself that is only focused on the negative.
2. Looking to place blame on others
Another major trait we commonly see associated with negativity is placing blame on others for your failures. At the end of the day, this life is honestly what you make it and placing blame on others will not benefit you. This not only brings you down, but it brings down the people around you.
Having a poor attitude is a waste of energy.
Even during seasons of negativity, happiness can always be found in the small things in life.
For me personally, I strive to have a good outlook on life and to be a light in those lives around me. Having a good attitude is something that can not only change the day you're having, but it can change the lives around you. This positive attitude will also help you cope with the daily stressors in life.
There are 2 major ways to change the negative attitudes to positive ones
1. Constructive thinking
Thinking about small daily tasks we are expected to accomplish every day can seem daunting if we're thinking about how much it will inconvenience us, but simply thinking about it constructively can change that.
Tasks and challenges are not placed in our lives to defeat us, rather they're put in our lives to make us a better person.
2. Maintaining a positive self-image
Having a positive image of yourself and the world around you can really make a huge difference.
Seeing yourself as "not good enough" or less than those around us often times is the most toxic thing for us. Viewing yourself as the amazingly unique person you are is one small adjustment you can make in your everyday life that will change your mindset.
Small steps have to be taken in order to change the negative attitudes we currently possess into positive ones. Remembering how amazing you truly are and how unique you are is just the beginning of the attitude transformation journey.
