Why You Should Attend a Large University

When it comes to choosing a college there is an overwhelming amount of criteria you want to be met. With that comes deciding between a small campus versus a large campus. Although there are advantages and disadvantages that come with both options, everyone can achieve what feels like "home" and flourish on a sizable college campus. Here are the ten best reasons to attend a large university.

1. There's never a reason to leave campus.

With there being tens of thousands of students, it is necessary for everything to be either directly on or near campus. Restaurants, groceries, clothing stores, gyms and libraries are all within walking distance.

2. Wide range of degree opportunities

Large schools often have a wide field of majors and that students can pursue. Students who are either undecided or want to switch majors entirely have a plethora of alternatives.

3. State of the art facilities

Most big schools accumulate enough money to build the newest, most up to date buildings with fascinating features. Any student can tell you, nothing is better than a newly updated classroom, library and gym.

4. Diversity among students

A diverse campus allows students to engage with individuals from all different backgrounds. A variety of race, gender and economic status prepares students for future engagements after college.

5. The athletics

Expect the best school spirit around when it comes to well-known universities! Every sporting event from football to golf is worth attending and pre-gaming.

6. Alumni networking

Tons of students equals tons of opportunities to network with jobs and internships. Throughout your college experience at a large school, you will be exposed to individuals involved in all fields willing to help you.

7. Tons of extracurricular activities

Intramural sports, clubs and thousands of other organizations on campus are offered to students. Joining an organization that sparks interest in you can make such a large campus feel considerably smaller.

8. Greek Life

Although this aspect does not appeal to everyone, Greek communities are often prevalent on large campuses. Greek Life is a suitable option for students who are able to dedicate a lot of time to the tight-knit community.

9. You can avoid people you don't want to be around.

Unlike high school, you are in control of who you spend your time with. It is easy to avoid specific people among thousands of students.

10. Everyone has heard of your school.

Nothing feels better than taking pride in your university. When someone asks you what school you go to, you're excited to say so! You know you made the best decision of your life when you want to recruit everyone to your school to share the same incredible experience.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead.
