I've never been the type of person to write a poem and then show it off for others to see. I've never been the type to write poems period, for fear that they would never be seen as "good." Over the years, I've come to realize it isn't always about being "good" that matters, it's about finding the courage to overcome those fears. Finding your ability to push through and having the strength to do something for yourself, no matter how overwhelmingly scary it may seem. Which is why I have decided to show off a poem of mine for the first time (I'm actually kind of proud of it, it might be short, but I'm proud of both the poem and myself):
He reminds me
of a movie creation,
cursed and confused,
colorless in his
meaningless reality.
I can hear him being played
like music, broken by
contemplation, too comfortable
with beliefs which hold
no self owned purpose.
The poem originated from a prompt that was given in my Advanced Workshop course. We were asked to write down a total of fifty words (including 5 completely made-up) and write them down in a list format. Then, we were to choose a number of those words (including 1 made-up) and arrange them in a way that made sense to us, before inserting other miscellaneous words to make it sound much more poetic, lyrical and didactic. From there, the endless possibilities continue with each word that is altered or removed, with tweaks here and there.
I’ve always had a hard time with poetry, however, the one thing I struggled the most with for this poem was finding the ability to find that poetic feel in creating something that had both meaning and feeling to it at once. I found myself placing words randomly on a sheet of paper, connecting them together until I felt that they were fitted well (sounded inspiring or motivational). It was the first sentence that tripped me most of all, but when I reached the second line and stopped at “movie creations” it was more of a smooth sail from then on out due to the fact that I knew what I wanted to say, even if the meaning could be translated in more than one set direction.
