Since Colin Kaepernick's kneeling during the National Anthem, he has gotten support from many fans, activists, military men and women, law enforcement and fellow players. Recently, on Thursday's NFL opener, Brandon Marshall did the same action as Kaepernick and kneeled during the anthem. This silent protest was followed by a storm of criticism as well as support.
As we saw Sunday with multiple players raising Black Power fists, kneeling, or locking arms during the national anthem, these players create a conversation. We as a nation are talking about it. These athletes have the privilege of having a very public voice because many look up to them and idolize them as players. As a nation, instead of criticizing, we need to listen. If a person does not know what it's like to be a victim of racism, listen to the individuals who do know. Be open-minded and don't jump to conclusions. That is how we continue the conversation because then we work together to listen to each other's stories. To the athletes, speak your mind, because if you do, you might be speaking for millions who do not have a voice in this country. You have a voice, make sure you use it because many don't have that opportunity.
