Why ASU?

Finances have always been a struggle at home and finances became the biggest barrier of me attending college. Me and my family moved from Jalisco, Mexico to join my dad on the other side and in search of a better future and a better life. When I began school at the age of ten in Arizona, my teachers inspired me to achieve a higher education and everyone said they saw potential in me. During my high school years I began my journey with the idea and mindset that I had to really put in the effort because succeeding meant the opportunity of attending college and becoming the a first generation in my family. My parents didn't attend college they barely finished elementary back in Mexico. My two older siblings also didn't have the opportunity of a higher education.

I began to dream of perhaps shooting out of state opportunities, although it was all going to come down to the school that I would be able to afford. The college dream wasn't well accepted at home at first, as my parents wanted me to choose a more "traditional path" as a Mexican daughter. After a troubled senior year and the end of a toxic romantic relationship, college was my only way out of the reality I was living. Financial aid packages began to arrive and it was time for the college decision, and still needed a stable major to decide on.

I chose ASU because I was awarded as an Obama Scholar. Being top 10% of my senior class and part of their honor roll for three years in a row; I was awarded the Latino Cesar Chavez Scholarship my first year. I began my new journey as a Nutrition major, then Creative Writing (my inner passion) and finally found what I was meant to major in: Communication and I recently added a minor in Media Analysis.

Just a Mexican girl with big dreams, although finances have been a barrier for me; ASU made my dreams possible...

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
