When Arizona State announced it was changing from Nike to Adidas in 2014, a looming cloud hung over the future look of the program. The response was met with mixed emotions, but Arizona State Athletics agreed to an eight-year partnership with Adidas that runs through the 2022-2023 season. The main reason for the jump — the increase in funding. Nike paid ASU $2.1 million in 2014, but Adidas upped the ante by paying the school $4.2 million a year. Frankly, I cared solely about how Adidas would modify our football uniforms, and this past Monday, Arizona State football players finally got a glance at the new jerseys they will be wearing for the upcoming season.
Twitter reactions from the players got me excited:
The uniforms were not released to the public until Thursday morning. I saw them right when they released them on Twitter, and I fell in love too. Five things stood out to me about these fresh new uniforms:
1. Every detail is 100 percent ASU specific and custom. Gloves, cleats, base layers for every uniform. This is evident in the new enlarged pitchfork logo on the pants and gloves.
2. The new jerseys struck the right balance between traditional and progressive for broad appeal.
3. Player names, numbers and Arizona State across the chest are all in Sun Devil gold.
4. Adidas got rid of the ASU on the shoulder, which was probably the least visually appealing thing about previous uniform.
5. The new compression jersey called "Primeknit" is 30 percent lighter than the standard football jersey. Also, the uniforms offer a greater range of motion and a cooling ability players are not used too. Lastly, the jersey is harder to grab, and what's harder to grab is harder to tackle.
Any of the new helmets can be rotated with those used in previous years. Even greater, there are special game-specific uniforms that have not been revealed to us. It is a great time to be an ASU Football Fan.
