The Sun Devils' win over their rival, University of Arizona, was done so in remarkable fashion. A tight game throughout, al almost buzzer-beater in the end, and a strong overtime dominated by ASU. This win is something for all ASU fans to be proud about for the rest of the season to come until they face the Wildcats again in Tucson.
But now for the tea.
As is currently stands, Arizona State hasn't beaten the University of Arizona for the past six times they've played each other. This is a first for Coach Bobby Hurley and a proud moment for the team. This win, however, sets up the team's next big test, if they can withstand Washington, who remains at the top of the Pac-12. Currently, the Sun Devils trail behind Washington, taking the number two spot with a record of 6-3, while Washington sits atop at 9-0. It seems that no other Pac-12 faired well against the Huskies, but that doesn't mean a determined ASU team can't make an impact.
As good as the Sun Devils can play, we understand that sometimes they can be inconsistent. This is still the same team that beat #1 Kansas then fell to Princeton and Utah within a few weeks. From the evidence presented last game, everyone is stepping up and doing their part, do all we can hope for, as fans, is to build enough momentum at this point in the season and finish strong, with ultimate hopes of winning the Pac-12 title and/or of course making it to March Madness.
Key players to look out for are Remy Martin, Zylean Cheatham, Romello White, Rob Edwards, Lugentz Dort, and Taeshon Cherry. Martin put up 31 points in the game against Arizona while playing 41 minutes, which is a long time if you're not familiar with college basketball. Zylean Cheatham was dangerous inside the paint, with 22 rebounds for the night after playing 40 minutes of the game, along with Romello White playing good defense and adding on his 11 points.
Rob Edwards is always a dagger in the opposing team's side with his three pointer's and high percentage free throws. Lastly, we now can see that Lugentz Dort and Taeshon Cherry have become well acclimated to the team and the college basketball scene as they've become way more aggressive with Dort's hard drives and Taeshon's shutdown defense. It's clear that these young men are learning well from the coaching staff and Coach Hurley.
If the Sun Devils start to be more consistent in their determined, ambitious, aggressive attitude, then this season will swing in their favor. What never fails is that this team always plays like they have something to prove, and it's always a great thing to see the passion that they bring to the court.
