Astrology Isn't Just For Fun, It's Much More Than That

Astrology.

A simple word with a not-so-simple meaning. Astrology isn't just horoscopes and figuring out which astrological sign is most compatible with yours when it comes to dating, it's a science that involves research, intricacy, and intrigue. Astrologists study the astronomical positions of planets and the effects they have on earth; they strongly believe that the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets during the time of your birth influence your future, as well as give insight into who you are as a person.

Growing up, my mom would always read my horoscope over breakfast. Despite not knowing where my "horoscope" came from, I knew that there was at least some validity behind it due to it being accurate more times than not. It wasn't until I visited a psychic my junior year of high school that I realized just how valid and accurate Astrology can be, as well as realizing just how important it is to learn as much as I can about it.

In a world that is drastically changing and full of uncertainty, it is nice to sort of "figure out" why events in the world transpire and why others behave the way they do. For me, Astrology has allowed me to reevaluate myself in a deeper sense; instead of looking at everything through a matter-of-fact way, I try to dive deeper and find acceptance, meaning, and purpose to my life. I find myself reflecting on who I am as a person and why I have become that person fairly often, and believe that that reflection is a healthy mechanism everyone should employ.

I know Astrology isn't for finding exact "truths," but it has opened my eyes to the powers unknown and the influences they have on everyone and everything. However, Astrology doesn't grant you the right to pass judgment on others or their behavior, rather it's a tool in understanding why that person and their behavior are the way they are. I think it is important for everyone to research their horoscope in hopes that they can better understand themselves, and find fun in understanding human character and the forces that can shape it.

Personally, I have developed an appreciation for my personality and characteristics after researching the powers that have shaped it, as well as have learned ways to better cope with unpleasant events and feelings. In the end, if Astrology turns out to be wrong and completely fictitious, it has given me a sense of hope that the way I am is the way I am supposed to be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
