assumptions

what you think of me couldn't be any more wrong.

7

As you walk through those doors everyone assumes. You're either one of them, or an outsider. You're either a winner or a loser, they judge you to fit what they want think, criticizing without hearing, talk before asking. Everyone assumes that you can't be a jock and gentle, you can't be funny and intelligent, you're either one or the other. You can't be happy and broken, you can't be alive and dead inside. You can't have a great family life with one parent, you can go to college if you're poor. But why can't I? Because everyone assumes that you fit into a mold that they've created for you. No one listens and if they do, it's only the things they want to hear. They see what we decide to show, and it's the first glance that they claim as to who and what we are. If I decide to wear a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt instead of a dress and heels, I don't want to be noticed. If my hair is uncombed and my shirt is wrinkled then I don't care. Because it's that first look that confuses everyone of who I am. But let's stop those first glance judgement, and inside put on a blindfold and instead of seeing who I am, listen to who I am, hear who I want to become and help me understand that everything isn't what it seems but what's behind the face and the body that matters. Let's stop guessing and expecting and start with seeking, the real answers to whom someone is once they walk through those doors.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."
